The essential steps to prepare for your move
For a simple, efficient move with no surprises, you only need to follow a few key steps. These practical tips will guide you from start to finish, so everything is clear, organized and much less stressful.
1. Be ready
- Contact the management at both addresses (current and new) and note the rules and restrictions.
- To confirm (managed building): time allowed for loading and unloading, assigned time slots, elevator requirements.
- Access: parking, entrance, elevator, stairs, codes/keys.
- Sorting: take the opportunity to sort out what you no longer want to keep.
- Inventory: have a list of the main items to move (it helps your advisor).
2. Choose the right company
- Price alone is not enough. Look for a reputable, insured company with clean equipment and an experienced crew.
- Check Google reviews (they cannot be deleted by the company).
- Useful questions:
- Are you insured?
- Is your equipment clean and up to date?
- Are your employees well trained and supervised?
- Do you follow up after the move?
- Can I get a quick answer during the move if needed?
3. Prepare your boxes
- Prefer full service? We will take care of it. Otherwise:
- Get boxes (ideally 2 ft³). See our packing combos.
- Label each box on the top and one side (room + contents).
- Clearly mark fragile items.
- Pack an essentials suitcase (valuables and important items) and keep it with you.
4. One week before
- Move these yourself: propane, gasoline, paint/solvents, pressurized aerosols, corrosive products, fireworks.
- Update your home insurance.
- Make your address changes and close/open services: SQCA (SAAQ, RAMQ, Revenu Québec, Élections Québec, Registrar of Civil Status), Hydro-Québec, CRA, Canada Post, subscriptions and deliveries (e.g. Amazon).
- Keys and access confirmed for the new address.
- If you want, disassemble the furniture that needs it (hardware in a labelled Ziploc bag). Otherwise, we will handle it.
5. Moving day: loading
- Wake up early and keep your phone fully charged.
- If possible, have children and pets looked after.
- Close the last boxes and take your essentials suitcase.
- Clear the walkways to make moving around easy.
- In winter: put down some salt at the entrance.
- Have your payment method ready for the end of the day and, if you wish, a tip.
- Welcome: meet the crew, do an initial walkthrough and mention anything specific (fragile items, existing marks, priorities).
- Stay available to answer questions.
- Take one last look around before leaving.
6. Moving day: unloading
- Arrive before the movers to ensure access.
- Stand near the entrance to point out the rooms as items come in.
- Before the invoice: confirm everything is unloaded and check the truck.
- Go over the invoice with the crew leader, make the payment, then… celebrate (and order in!).
7. After the move
- Google reviews: leave an honest review. If a small thing went wrong, call us first so we can make it right.
- Boxes: remove the tape, fold and recycle; if needed, we can take them back.
- Check that all your address changes are complete.
